Road Trip to Gisborne (East Coast Nth Island NZ) May 1st & 2nd

One day Blake, Jonno, Jesse, Julie and Powerdog set off on a road trip…….

The itinerary – Tauranga to Gisborne driving along the coast road via Hicks Bay.

Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the sun each day and always the first city to bring in the new year!

We stopped in Whakatane for lunch then stayed the night in the sleepy little town of Hicks Bay. We also visited the Tolaga Bay Wharf - at 660 metres in length it is the longest in New Zealand. It was here that Captain Cook stayed six days repairing the 'Endeavour' and taking on water and supplies. We were quite surprised at how remote this area is – no phone reception and few shops – Jonno struggled to find a meat pie for his morning tea!

The accommodation at Hicks Bay (renamed by us to Hicksville) – cozy room housing 3 adults, 1 baby and a dog!

The Lighthouse

The East Cape Lighthouse is the most easterly lighthouse in New Zealand. The reward when you climb the 700 odd steps is the amazing coastal views and Raukumara range. A perfect spot to catch the sunrise – you would be first in the world to see the start of the new day. Of course we would have experienced all that if we had only climbed to the top……
