Anna, Jackie, Judy H., Shannon (from Nacogdoches) & Sharon (visiting Aussie) & myself piled into my Windstar van and we drove to Brazos Bend State Park - an amazing place only about an hour out of the city.
The park is a haven for native wildlife and plants - there are lakes and wetlands, walking trails, lots of birds and turtles but the most popular residents are the American alligators. We walked around two of the lakes in the park and saw lots of alligators - it's a fabulous place to see them up close and personal - not that we got too close!
We had a great day and on the way home had a quick drive through George Ranch, an historic site with more than 100 years of Texas history. This Ranch began in 1824 when this part of the country was still Mexico and the first American pioneers settled near the Brazos River. Definitely somewhere we will return and spend more time.
