Sunday January 10th will long be remembered as a very, very special marathon. It was my 2nd marathon in 12 months (and in my whole life!) – yeah !!! and John and I walked together but it’s what happened from the half way mark that was so special. It was a particularly cold morning – in fact
After completing 13 miles we found ourselves walking with Deb, a fellow walker from Houston Fit’s walking group - this was Debbie’s first marathon. On marathon day Deb's family were out in full force all wearing purple t-shirts, Deb’s favorite color, and all shirts were emblazed with individual words of encouragement. Deb is the eldest of 10 children so you can just imagine how large this family was – there were probably 28 of them cheering Deb on today. They took it in turns to walk with her and now us, as we were supporting Deb as well. Truth be known they were also encouraging and energising us. Some walked sections of the route, others were standing on corners and at aid stations holding up banners and flags - they were so inspiring. They sang and told jokes and were great company.
At about the 20 mile mark Deb 'hit the wall' and asked John for help. He talked her through it, got her to slow down, strip down a little, splash some water on her face - it all seemed to work and she soldiered on although at a much slower pace.
Two of her sons walked either side holding her hands and everyone kept telling her how much they loved her, how awesome she was, how much effort she had put in to get this far and how she had the strength to finish. Her elderly Mum even jogged along the sidewalk for a short distance to keep Deb's spirits up!
We've never seen anything like it - so much love and support pouring out from so many family members - it was extraordinary. Deb told us she was so blessed to belong to such a loving and caring family.
The finish line was a mass of people in purple t-shirts - all her family cheering and clapping. Deb crossed the line in tears and her Mum presented her with a bouquet of purple flowers. It was so inspirational.
John and I felt so privileged to have been included in their family - they also gave us a lot of support and encouragement – it certainly took my mind off my protesting feet & legs! It is a day we certainly will always remember.
Deb and I sadly commented on how the season was now over and we had achieved our goal - so there was only one thing we could do - come back and do it all again next season!!! Actually I still have one more event to complete – next week’s Houston Half Marathon – piece of cake after finishing a marathon……..!?!!?!!
We also received encouragement from our own family - Blake rang twice during the race and Josh sent a text - it was great to know that they were supporting us from the other side of the world. Thanks guys it really helps when we are out there pounding the pavement - just knowing your thoughts are with us lifts us (and our feet) - love you heaps.......
