John & I saw the Pogues in Dublin with Blake & Jonno a few years ago and have been listening to their music ever since so when they announced a concert in Houston I quickly bought tickets. Unfortunatley John was in Alaska when they came to town and was very disappointed to have to miss the show - however life goes on and I was here to enjoy the concert so I invited my friend Judy to join me.
The Pogues are a band of mixed Irish & English background playing traditional Irish
music fronted by Shane MacGowan. Shane had previously been sacked from the band due to drinking problems and is now back although I'd suggest he still has those drinking problems......He sang `goin' where streams of whiskey are flowin,' but sure looked like he'd arrived there already! He wasn't on the stage at all without a cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other! He slurred his way through all the songs John & I had heard him sing previously in Dublin.
I was really looking forward to hearing them sing Fairytale of New York (which was voted "the best Christmas song ever" in the UK in 2004) - but it was not to be, even after 3 encores!
Anyway Judy & I had a great night - it was actually quite amusing watching Shane stumble his way through the night - I guess the Pogues just wouldn't be the same with him!
The absolute highlight of the evening however was when Judy asked if I would like to join her on a trip to New Hamshire leaving on Saturday morning. Of course I jumped at the opportunity and spent the next day getting organised for our early departure the following morning flying to Boston via Atlanta, Georgia.
I keep saying that life is good - each day just gets better and better........
