Day Trip to Taos & Blake's Birthday

Dec 26th - Blake's 29th birthday!

Can you believe we saw this sign on our way to Taos!! (it's actually a fast food chain selling "lotsaburgers"!) Blake's birthday will also be remembered as the time we welcomed our new spoodle granddog "Powerdog" into the family!

As we were driving to Taos (70 miles north of Santa Fe) it started to snow and we were so excited. Then the snowfall became heavier and heavier and we became quieter and quieter and were really quite relieved when we arrived in Taos. We are driving a Jeep however it is not a 4 wheel drive and we'd already been stuck in the snow once in the main street of Santa Fe and some nice people helped push us out of our park! Tricky stuff this snow.....

Taos is an absolutely beautiful little town located in the foothills of the largest peaks in New Mexico, the Sange di Cristo Mountains and also in the valley of a small tributary of the Rio Grande. It is a popular home for many artists and was the home of English novelist, D.H. Lawrence in the 1920s and now has famous residents such as Julia Roberts, Val Kilmer and Donald Rumsfeld. We rugged up and walked around the quaint little plaza in the centre of town checking out the shops and galleries and then had lunch in a warm little cafe where we met a couple of the locals who shared lots of info about things to do during our quick visit.

We visited the Taos Pueblo, a Native American village with multi-storied adobe buildings which have been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years. The Pueblo is made entirely of adobe - earth mixed with water and straw, and the walls are several feet thick. The outside surfaces of the Pueblo are continuously maintained (often annually) by replastering with thick layers of mud and straw. There are over 1900 Taos Indians living on Taos Pueblo lands. It was such an interesting place and we met quite a few of the local Indians and saw many of their dogs who just ran around in the snow (obviously their coats are great insulators!) We also met an Australian family on holidays - the Aussies are such great travellers it's hard to escape them!
