Raw Food Pot Luck night
Wow – look at this amazing food. We ate like royalty! Hard to believe all this food is raw – nothing has been cooked. 5 of us all celebrated birthdays during the last week – Tambra, Anne, Michael, Joe & me and everyone sang happy birthday and enjoyed the chocolate-carrot birthday cake made especially for the occasion.
Friday 29th Aug
Dined in John & Cheryl’s apartment with Bill & Anna – their table was covered with huge green banana plant leaves and we assembled our own cold rolls – great food, great company, great night.
Sat 30th Aug
This morning we were up at 4.15am and fronted for our training walk with the Houston Fit group at 4.50am. We walked 9 miles and it was actually quite pleasant as the temperature wasn’t too bad – that’s one of the reasons for the early start as it is much too hot and humid to exercise later in the day. We were home by 7.30am, just in time for a quick dip in the pool before heading out to an Education & Training Special Interest Group meeting at 9am. We have attended this group several times and it basically explores the different Myers-Briggs ‘types’ (a psychological assessment to identify certain personality differences). John roped me into this one!
We arrived home about 2pm, fell into bed for a quick napette before going off to the baseball. This was our first visit to Minute Maid Ballpark – a magnificent stadium built specifically for baseball. Fortunately we knew the basic rules and could follow what was happening and it was happening! In the 1st innings there were 3 home runs and the crowd were going wild – amazing how they can be so loud and at the same time eat copius amounts of food – hot dogs, cotton candy (our fairy floss), corn chips smothered in melted cheese, peanuts – it’s junk food heaven (or should I say heart attack haven!) Anyway we had a great night, fantastic seats and really enjoyed the game - Astros V Cardinals with the local side, Houston Astros, winning.
Mon 1st Sept – Labor Day public holiday
Today we rode our bikes into Downtown to check out all the Labor Day festivities. It was great – we rode past the Toyota Centre, the George Brown Convention Centre and Minute Maid Stadium. We stopped and had lunch at Discovery Park where I met the cutest policeman – Officer Wiley!!!

I reciprocated the dinner John & Cheryl had prepared for us by having them to our apartment for tea. I made gazpacho soup, a vegie loaf, a spaghetti dish and a salad followed by homemade fruit & nut chocolate and date-nut logs – all raw. Very tasty and a great night (must have been ok ‘cos Cheryl asked for the recipes!!)
Fri 5th Sept
Met a new friend at yoga this morning – Ginger. She has her own jewellery shop called “The Family Jewels” and we wasted no time checking it out. Anna, Jackie and I spent the afternoon there and made a few purchases from the beautiful collection created by the Zuni, Navajo, Santo Domingo and Cherokee Indian tribes. (Have I mentioned that John has been coming to yoga when he can fit it in with his work schedule? He's really enjoying it and the girls love having him there!)

Sat 6th Sept
This morning’s training walk was only 8 miles so we got to sleep in ‘til 5.30am! It was a great walk around the huge mansions in the River Oaks area. Saturday night we went to dinner with Nikolay & Lena at a little restaurant in The Heights called Shades and then drove out to a questionable little bar (one of those places that you would drive straight past and never consider going in!) Nikolay and Lena are fans of some local singers and this is where they were playing tonight which is why we found ourselves in this unusual dark and smoky place. And they were fantastic! It was a special night and another amazing experience for us here in Texas.
Sun 7th Sept
Attended an open air performance in Discovery Park, Downtown, of Indonesian drums performed by the Space City Gamelan – very relaxing. Arrived home around 5pm to the surprise visit of Lydia and Nancy to see me for my birthday. Nancy had prepared an amazing chocolate cake and we ate that with a cup of tea before going out to dinner at a lovely little restaurant where we sat outside next to a beautiful fountain. My birthday is definitely finished now – managed to stretch it out over a week or two though! Thanks Lydia for Solomon – I love him.

John has just arrived home from San Antonio where he has spent the last three days. I’m still not that excited about staying home alone – however it doesn’t happen that often thank goodness.
