Another year – another birthday. This year was a little special as I was born in ’54 and am turning 54 – worth a celebration don’t you think!Well John thought so as he organized a great weekend away to celebrate my big day. He organized a snappy little convertible and whisked me off to the seaside town of Galveston. We had a wonderful time cruising along the esplanade and all around the town with our hair blowing in the wind.....
The beaches here are very different to the Aussie beaches. The sand is far from white and the water is far from blue - in fact I would say they are both more brown than anything else! And along each beach there are chairs and umbrellas set up and one can hire these for $25 a day! We chose to just walk along the beach and paddle our toes in the water.
We checked out all the local sights - Moody Gardens, The Bishops House, the Opera House, took a ferry over to Bolivar Island, strolled along the Strand, lunched in a wonderful little cafe - it was all very relaxing and memorable.
On the night of my birthday we walked to the jetty (called a pier here in the US) across the road from where we were staying and paid our dollar to go and sit up on the roof of the little shop situated on the end of the jetty. It was very kistch with its fake palm trees but we soon discovered it was certainly worth the dollar we handed over. The view back over the mainland was spectacular and the sunset was awesome. It was the perfect way to finish a wonderful day.
Thanks to everyone who sent me their good wishes, cards and gifts - I am really grateful to have you all in my life.
