While out walking through the nearby woods, we came across this amazing creat
ure - the armadillo. We are using the trail through the woods as part of our marathon training route and yes I am walking the marathon in January with John (who is also doubling as my personal trainer!) We love the woods (within walking distance of our apartment), as they remind us so much of the Heysen Trail and the Adelaide Hills – of course on a much smaller scale and with armadillos and woodpeckers instead of kangaroos and koalas.July - Corpus Christi
This was our 3rd trip over the last month or so and this time we were able to stay on over a weekend and make the most of some beautiful beaches. We stayed in a hotel right on the beach and it was a wonderful place to escape the very hot and humid weather. I actually donned the bathers and hit the water……
Fri 25th July - Group Dinner
This was our turn to host our American friends (Candace & Bart, Diane & George, Pat & Sam) whom we catch up with as a group regularly. We gathered out by the pool under the new gazebo and entertaining area. A great night was had by all including John mastering a new fangled coffee machine (borrowed exclusively for our guests!)
Sat 2nd Aug - Soccer / Art Exhibition
John has been missing soccer ever since we left Australia and finally we managed to get to a game. We invited a couple who live in our apartment block to join us and attend the game between Houston Dynamos and Columbus. The Dynamos won 2-nil and we watched both goals kicked right in front of us – we had the best seats! That same night we had also been invited to the opening of an exhibition at an art gallery. Fortunately we were able to fit both activities in and popped into the gallery before the restaurant before the soccer (amazing how much one can fit into an outing!) Our friend Melissa was exhibiting some of her glass artware and invited us to share in the fun of seeing her stuff on display.

Sat 16th - Aug Kenny Chesney/Keith Urban Concert
Guess what? I won tickets to the Kenny Chesney Pirates & Poets concert and we att
ended last Saturday night. The concert was at Reliant Stadium, a huge American football stadium and our seats were in the ‘nose bleed’ area – as far back and as high up as you can go. Lucky for the big screens which actually didn’t look that big! We watched Keith Urban followed by Kenny Chesney however left before the finish as the acoustics were terrible and the sound didn’t coincide with the big screens and we really couldn’t see much. It was a great experience particularly seeing Keith in concert again but I guess you get what you pay for!!!! We actually caught the Metro train to the stadium (the only train in Houston and it only goes along one road!) so that was a fun thing to do as well.
Mon 18th Aug
We were invited over to Renata & Branko’s place to see photos of their trip to Monument Valley as we are going there next month with visiting Aussies, Marg & Pete Germein and Julie Harris. We picked up some great travelling tips and places to see. Thanks Renata & Branko. This is what’s waiting for us in Arizona – awesome eh!

TuesTues 19th Aug - Bart's Birthday & Miller Theatre
We were invited to a ‘Marguerita Happy Hour’ at a nearby Mexican Restaurant to celebrate Bart’s birthday. It was great mingling with Bart & Candace’s rellies – what a great family.

We then headed off to the Miller Outdoor Theatre to see the first of the Classic Cinema Comedy movies "The Thin Man" (1934) starring William Powell & Myrna Loy. What a fun night.

Fri 22nd Aug - Aurora Theatre
This little wooden building was built in 1924 as a church and later converted into a 100 seat capacity cinema and is one of the world's finest microcinemas dedicated to non-commerical film, video and media. We met up with Lydia and Nancy and were once again reminded of how fragile our environment is after watching a documentary called 'Sustainable Table' about the food we eat - where it comes from and what effects it has on the environment and our bodies - totally scary!
