Houston Zoo

Well after being here for 18 months we finally visited the Houston Zoo (on May 31st) - thanks to free tickets generously given to us by our friend Lydia.

The Zoo hasn't always been one of my favourite places - I think it has something to do with seeing all those animals in cages - however we were told that most of these animals are in great condition and will live longer than if they were in the wild, so I guess it's a positive place - at least I got to see some birds and animals that I would never experience in their natural environment.

The Houston Zoo is set out beautifully - lots of space and lots of trees and shade which is really important in this hot humid climate. I think the highlight was the lion enclosure which included a 'tunnel' for visitors to walk along and look through a glass wall, giving us a close-up view of these magnificent animals. The lo-light was watching the elephant in his enclosure do 'tricks' in order to receive food - not really very natural. We also got to see our first "road runner" and "prairie dog" - both very different to what we imagined (certainly didn't see any half-witted comic coyote trying to outsmart the road runner!!!)

There was also an "Australian" section - although we could only spot one koala - perhaps they are going to add a kangaroo or two in the future.......
