Galveston - a day at the beach

Saturday 28th April - Beautiful day around 84F (29C) so we packed the picnic basket and drove down to our nearest piece of ocean - Galveston Island. What a wonderful place. Not quite the white sand and surf of the Gold Coast but hey it has sand and shells and salt water!

We did the tourist bit on the drive down and stopped to see the Battleship Texas and the San Jacinto Monument which commemorates those who contributed to the independence of Texas.

We spent most of the day in the Galveston State Park - a very peaceful place with the beach on one side of the road and nature reserve and lakes on the other. They have amazing looking shelters on the grassed area near the beach where we sat and had lunch and relaxed with some reading material followed by a 2 hour walk along the beach.

We then checked out the nature park where we discovered funny little cabins - basically little huts with screens at the window openings to keep out the bugs and mozzies - one step up from a tent but nowhere near the 'Hilton'! Would be a great place to stay for kayakers, bird watchers, nature lovers etc as the lake system offers very calm waters and the bushland is full of wildlife. Just down the road the contrast is unbelievable - away from the peaceful bushland to the 'holiday homes' of the Texans - they say that everything is bigger in Texas! Amazing homes built right on the beach - just waiting for those hurricanes to come and carry them away.........

Had dinner in one of the local restaurants in Galveston and then headed home. Fell into bed exhausted at 11.30pm after a wonderful day at the beach.
